Jefferson residents will find new blue trash carts on their property some time this week, but the carts should remain unused for another week.
A crew from Elliot Equipment will be in Jefferson this week to assemble and deliver more than 1,600 Shaefer trash carts. The trash carts belong to the city and will be stamped with a serial number. Each serial number will be recorded with its corresponding address.
Most of the carts will be 95-gallon carts with a capacity for five or six 30-gallon bags. If residents prefer, they can call city hall and receive a 65-gallon cart. According to people who have used the carts, the larger carts are easier to maneuver because they have larger wheels.
The new trash carts will allow automated trash pick-up, slated to begin Tuesday, Sept. 3. That’s the day the city’s new New Way Sidewinder garbage truck goes into service. It’s been in Jefferson for several weeks, giving the sanitation crew time to practice using the mechanical arm to pick up the cart, empty it, and return it curbside.
The city also purchased a New Way Cobra read load packer; cost of the two trucks was $400,200. Cost of 1,782 trash carts was $114,984.
Information about automated trash collection and where to place the carts curbside will be included with the carts. Residents can also call the city office at 386-3111.
